What We Do
We split our groups into three developmental
stages, you can choose the one most suitable for your child’s
age – you would be able to move your child up or down an
age group to suit them best.
Birth and Toddling (approximately 15 months) – Tiny
Quavers – baby bonding, baby touch, music, songs and
action rhymes, movement, baby signing, bubbles, treasure baskets
and a valuable opportunity for the parent or carer to dedicate really
great quality time to bonding with their baby.
Toddling
and up to approx 2yrs – Little Crotchets
– lots more songs and rhymes – familiar and new, musical
instruments, sound sacks, global music, music appreciation, movement,
dance, simple rhythm work, stories with props and music, parachute
games and lots of other activities – parent or carer very
involved.
2 years plus – Mini-Minims
– more of the above with many more age-appropriate rhythm
and musical activities – introducing musical terminology
and trying to build on rhythms, anticipating rhyme and sound patterns,
listening and repeating rhythms and sounds (all very valuable prior
to learning to read), making up songs and stories as well as lots
of books and stories. In this group we hope that the children will
build up confidence to take part in some activities without their
adult leading them all the way – but still with lots of encouragement.
Michael Morpurgo,
former Childrens Poet Lauriete recently stated that literacy levels
in schools are currently lower than they should be. This he attributed
in part to children not being read to by parents (because of constraints
on time amongst other reasons), children often are not encouraged
to dive into the depths of excitement, interest and intrigue a book
can offer and only encounter books as a tool for learning to read
once they start school. At Rhythm and Rhymers we bring stories to
children in a variety of interesting and stimulating ways to help
them enjoy books for the fun value of the stories they contain.
